6 Great Hobbies For A-Type Personalities

Hobbies can really enrich your life. They’ve been proven to lower stress and improve your mental health overall. One of the challenges, though, can be finding the right hobby for you and your personality type.

When it comes to personality types, most hobbies are not a “one size fits all”. For example, a B-type personality might love gardening because it’s peaceful, requires mindful problem solving, and a head for details. But an A-type personality would rather do pretty much anything other than gardening. There’s so many details, and it takes so long to see the results!

Many business owners and executives fit into the A-type personality, and that can make hobbies a difficult area to explore. So what kinds of hobbies would have more appeal to an A-type personality?

What are some of the typical A-type traits? Well, if you are an A-type personality then you’ve probably already skipped over this sentence and moved on to the hobby suggestions.

People who have an A-type personality often:

  • Need a reason or purpose to be doing an activity
  • Love efficiency and dislike wasting time
  • Have a deep appreciation for a good task list
  • Struggle taking the time to relax or slow down
  • Like to have fast results from their efforts
  • Don’t want to be bogged down with the details, they just want to do the things
  • Must be accomplishing objectives

Based on these personality traits, A-types will have to choose their hobbies wisely. Here’s our top six suggestions.

ONE: Martial Arts

Martial arts are an excellent hobby for A-types. Every movement that you learn has a purpose, and is designed for efficiency. You will generally see personal results at the end of each class. While you may not be an instant All-Valley Karate Tournament champion, you will have learned at least one new thing and that feeds an A-type’s desire for accomplishment.

Your level of success and progress in martial arts is self-driven–another quality the A-type appreciates. The time and focus that is put into your practice will directly affect your results.

Martial Arts has the obvious benefits of improving your physical health and stamina, but people also discover they gain self-confidence, and a better sense of self esteem overall. More often than not, a martial art becomes a passion. Classes happen in every city, and with online learning now a part of everyday life, students can choose studios regardless of geography.

TWO: Cooking

Cooking is another great hobby for the A-type. And take note: we do mean cooking, as opposed to Baking. Baking involves a tremendous amount of details and specific measurements, which A-types may not like. Cooking, however, is more forgiving and the effort-to-result timeline is very short. Even the basics of cooking such as food safety, knife skills, and cooking techniques will likely appeal to the A-type because they love to be armed with knowledge–the more rules you learn, the more you can improvise.

For the A-type who enjoy lists and an efficient and organized timeline, cooking can be a hobby that scratches that itch. If you just want to get going and produce something quickly, though, that’s easily accomplished as well.

Bonus: cooking can appeal to both the introvert and the extrovert–and teamwork in the kitchen is A-type friendly, with everyone being assigned their own task.

THREE: Bouldering or Rock Climbing

Pull out the carabiners! Rock climbing and A-types are a match made in heaven. If you’re not familiar with bouldering, it is a type of free-form rock climbing on large rocks (boulders), small rock formations, or on climbing walls in an indoor climbing gym. This means less equipment, quicker setup time, and not so many dizzying heights.

Not only is rock climbing a complete body workout from core to cardio, but it oftentimes has an almost meditative quality as you focus only on the task at hand.

Climbing is a grab-and-go activity, great for A-types. Some climbing shoes and chalk powder (to prevent slippery hands) and you are set to go! As a full mind and body workout, this could be just the hobby an A-type needs in their life.

FOUR: Classic Cars

There may be nothing an A-type enjoys more than sharing knowledge with others. That’s why going to show-n-shines with a shiny classic car can be a great hobby, especially for retiring executives. A-types like the hustle and bustle of busy places but sometimes struggle with small talk and socializing; show-and-shines provide the party atmosphere plus an easy topic of conversation.

A-types thrive in like-minded communities, so the camaraderie of the classic car clique can be a bonus for them especially if they’re retired and struggling with the reduced human interaction that can occur.

For the A-types who like to get their hands dirty, restoring a classic automobile can be a great activity. But the good news is that you don’t have to work on your own car to drive it around and show it off.

FIVE: CARPENTRY

You might not think of carpentry as A-type-friendly because of the amount of measuring and detail work required. But carpentry can be a great option because it’s very forgiving: if you mismeasure a board, pull it out and try again.

Carpentry can also appeal to A-types because it is inherently useful: things that you make in your woodshop can serve a functional purpose and may earn you the appreciation of your friends and family. A-types should be careful when considering what types of carpentry to try: it’s not a great idea to build the addition to your house if you’re not patient with measurements and technique. But building a table, jewellery box, or spice rack is well within the reach of most amateur woodworkers.

SIX: RV CAMPING

If you’ve got an A-type who just hates to sit still, RV camping may be the best hobby around. Regular camping can be fun, but once you’ve set up the tent and the fire, there’s very little left to do–and that can rankle the nerves of an A-type. When RV camping–using a trailer, fifth wheel, or motorhome–there’s always something that needs doing.

Whether it’s filling the water tank, sweeping the kitchen, prepping the outdoor BBQ zone for dinner, or planning out your next route….and RV keeps you busy day and night. On the upside, for the A-type’s travelling companions, these trips can be a real chance to relax: sit around the campfire while your A-type talks about surge protectors with the neighbouring camper.
